It is easy to neglect yourself and get drawn into motherhood. From the time you learn that you are carrying a child in your womb, up to the time you risk your life to bring your firstborn into the world down to caring for several brood at present, all these encompass your day to day existence as a mother.
Master Of Multi-tasking (MOM) is how we describe most mothers. The job requires 24/7 undertaking for the family and this very reason is why we tend to overlook our own self.
“Every parent wants to give the best to their children”, we hear this statement all too many times to the point that we can already call it a cliché but can we deny that being a parent gets you ready to endure all sacrifices for your children?

Sun Life recognizes this trend and decided to treat selected mothers to their Mom’s Day out series. First installment commenced last June 21, 2017 at I’m Hotel, Makati City. Yours truly was fortunate enough to be included in the first batch of moms who indulged on inspiring talks from the experts as well as privilege to bask in a pampering session at the hotel’s prestigious I’m Onsen Spa.
Life Balance
Life Balance
The event started with a talk by Ms. Michelle Alignay aka. Mommy Ichel, She is a family specialist, a registered Psychologist and a Guidance Councilor. She stated the importance of knowing your balance. In some cases, balance doesn’t have to be equal. The crowd kept on nodding in unison as most of Ichel’s statements are all too familiar to us, striking an accord to most of our daily routine.
She encouraged to attend to these imbalances as they come and do not wait for a big message before you acknowledge that you are out of balance as this might bring about a larger imbalance. She also pushed the importance of self-care which she categorized into: Re-Balancing, Re-Freshing and Re-Charging.
My first encounter with Mommy Ichel was when she launched her book Family Goals during one of our Feast sessions at PICC (Feast is a weekly catholic gathering lead by Bro. Bo Sanchez). Her book teaches us how to embrace your family life in different circumstances.
Ichel also reiterated what most of us mothers already know but we are so engrossed with our daily routine to make changes. She pointed out that “Imbalance Brings an Internal Knot”, she further stated that areas in our body experiences tension or pain as well as stress whenever we experience hurtful infection, thus causes an internal knot. Therefore, it is necessary to understand what causes these emotions and do something about it.

Financial Balance
After re-learning about life and emotional balance, financial balance should not be far behind. Another speaker who gave us very informative insights was Sun Life Cluster Head Mylene Segismundo. She showed what parents with little kids will be faced with in terms of education come the time they will enroll for college.
Most of the attendees gasped upon seeing the chart on how much a college education will cost them in 17 years onwards. I myself will have a couple of college kids by that time and I felt the need to calculate right then and there.
A word to the wise is start investing for your kids’ education. I know this is easier said than done, but Ms. Segismundo showed us another chart where doing so is indeed achievable (I suggest that you talk to a Sun life financial advisor to be enlightened). This reminded me to call mine to schedule for a presentation.
It was stressed that in building an educational fund, 3 key components are to be addressed: Time, Money and Interest. Money and Interest can be earned as you go along but Time spent procrastinating will never be brought back, hence, the earlier you start, the better.
Sun Life’s My Future fund is a target date fund that invests primarily in high-quality stocks that promotes capital appreciation at the onset to maximize earning potential in the earlier years and shifts to wealth preservation to reduce exposure to risk as the maturity of the fund approaches. It offer target dates from 2020 onwards with five-year increment.
She Said, She Said
The second installment of #SunShorts 2 gives us a fishbowl insight on how single parents struggle to provide for their children, a task two parents are supposedly sharing. The film undeniably touched the hearts of many parents, giving them a time-lapse of events that they might have experience or are experiencing now.

After my spa treatment, I can somehow say that I’m a step closer to regaining my life balance J.
A sumptuous buffet dinner followed afterwards at the hotel’s gastronomic dining – Bloom.
