Little did I know, eating unhealthy can also be passed on to the rest of the family like a domino effect. Two of my kids are on the heavy side.
Exercise never crossed my mind until I encountered a wakeup call in the form of a family health issue. That incident prompted me to reflect on my body more for health reason than vanity.
I have to do something about our health problem before it’s too late. Incidentally, a running event presented itself January 2018, Sun Life Resolution Run became my gun start to wellness. Running 3k for my first-ever run felt like forever, coupled with a migraine, I couldn’t believe I was able to finish the run at a comical time of 1hr 30mins. Running with my husband proved helpful as he kept pushing me to my limits and cheering that I can do this.
1. Involve the whole family in a dialogue
Get each family member’s opinion of their health and let them know how it can be improved.
2. Set a schedule and follow it
Get into a family exercise schedule, i.e. walking together after dinner a couple of times a week can be a good bonding time. Do this regularly and increase the frequency as needed.
3. Advocate eating healthy
That extra rice may seem to be acceptable occasionally but it can take a toll on you once it becomes a habit. Cutting on sugar intake one day at a time can also be beneficial in the long run.
A year after my first run, the whole family joined Sunpiology TR10 – Sun Life Resolution Run last January 2019. It was another first since all six family members including my youngest (6yr old) finished 3k. It was indeed a feat that we can be proud of.
